Are Ceramic Mugs Microwave Safe? Here's the Honest Answer

Honestly, we get asked this probably more than anything else. Someone buys a mug, loves it, and then stands in the kitchen at 7am wondering whether putting it in the microwave is going to cause some kind of incident.

The short answer is no, it's fine. But there's a bit more to it than that so let's actually explain.

Are ceramic mugs microwave safe?

Most ceramic mugs are microwave safe and all del hogar mugs are 100% microwave safe unless we've specifically said otherwise on the product page. The reason not all ceramics are is usually metallic detailing. Gold rims, silver paint, anything shiny and metallic does not belong in a microwave. It can spark and it will ruin your day. But standard ceramic with no metallic elements is absolutely fine.

How to check before you try

First, check the product description. If it says microwave safe, you're sorted. If you're not sure about a mug you already own from somewhere else, do the water test. Fill the mug with water and microwave it for 30 seconds. If the mug itself gets hotter than the water, it's absorbing the heat and it's not safe. If the water is hotter and the mug is just warm from the water touching it, you're fine.

And if the mug has any kind of metallic rim or detailing, just don't risk it. Reheat in a different mug.

The one thing to watch even with safe ceramics

Thermal shock is the enemy of all ceramics, microwave safe or not. If your mug has been in the fridge or freezer and you put it straight into the microwave, the sudden temperature change can cause small cracks over time. You might not notice immediately but it adds up. Leave the mug out for a few minutes first. Straightforward.

This also applies to pouring boiling water into a completely cold mug. Room temperature first, then the hot liquid.

How do I know if any ceramic mug is microwave safe?

My ceramic mug cracked after I used the microwave. What happened?

Almost certainly thermal shock. Going from cold to very hot quickly causes stress in the ceramic. Let your mug sit at room temperature for a bit before microwaving, especially if it's been in the fridge or a cold room.

Are del hogar mugs dishwasher safe as well?

Yes, all our mugs are dishwasher safe. For hand-painted pieces we'd suggest hand washing where possible, it keeps the detailing looking good for longer. But the dishwasher won't ruin them.

What about mugs with gold or coloured rims?
